FIVE SCRIPTURES TO PRAY OVER YOUR CHILDREN

The Power of Praying the Scriptures Over Those You Love

I have two sons and one daughter. My children are in the process of becoming self-sufficient adults. In some ways, I have less influence over them than I once had. This is the time to step up my prayers for them.

Praying Over Your Children

“Hear my prayer, O God; listen to the words of my mouth” (Psalm 54:2).

The temptation is to think that my job as a parent is over. Nothing could be further from the truth. My experience is that it’s not over, it’s simply shifted to a new phase that requires new parenting skills and strategies.

Praying over your children is never more critical than when they are no longer under your constant care.

Five Scriptures to Pray Over Your Children

Here are five Scriptures I consistently pray over my children.

1. Prayer for his/her mind.

Scripture: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2).

Prayer: Help her to stay strong to her convictions and to fight against the temptation to conform to every passing fad. Protect her against all the voices and images that are telling her she is not enough. Let her know that she is enough just the way she is. Help her to feel beautiful and worthy on the inside. Help her to live at the center of your will, O God.

2. Prayer for his/her emotions.

Scripture: “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God” (Psalm 43:5).

Prayer: Comfort him in the necessary trials of life and protect his heart from evil. Lift him out of depression and discouragement. Help him to hunger and thirst for you, O God, and keep him thriving in the joy of life.

3. Prayer for his/her friendships.

Scripture: “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24).

Prayer: Surround her with good and Godly friends. Give her friends wisdom and discernment. Help her to have healthy relationships with other women. Surround her with wise mentors who will give Godly counsel.

4. Prayer for his/her heart.

Scripture: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23).

Prayer: Guard his heart, O God, and place your Spirit within him. Keep his eyes away from evil and surround him with your hedge of protection. Instill in him a love for the things that will bring him true joy and fulfillment. Help him to follow You in all his ways.

5. Prayer for his/her faith.

Scripture: “So in Christ Jesus, you are all children of God through faith …” (Galatians 3:26).

Prayer: Build a strong faith in her, O God, and help her stay close to you. Give her experiences that will strengthen her faith. Help her to see you in everything around her, and give her peace.

These are simple but powerful prayers that will bless your children. You can certainly write your own. The key is to pray simply, briefly, and consistently for your children!
